Angola–Malawi (3–1): Aliou Cissé’s side dominate possession and draw level with Egypt

Two minutes. That was all Felício Milson needed to open the scoring on Tuesday evening at Luanda’s Estádio 11 de Novembro and set the tone for a night in which Malawi mostly chased the ball. Angola beat the Flames 3–1 for their first competitive win under Aliou Cissé, who was unveiled in Luanda on 9 April.

The result puts the Palancas Negras — the black antelopes — level with Egypt on four points after two matches. The Pharaohs stay ahead on goal difference (+5 to +2). Malawi, second before visiting Luanda, drop to third on three points.

761 passes and an own goal

SNA’s statistics show Angola had 72% possession and attempted more than two and a half times as many passes as Malawi, 761 to 298, with 90% completion. That control produced 21 shots, nine on target, compared with Malawi’s six, only two of which hit the target.

After Milson’s early opener, Angola waited until the 38th minute to double their lead through Mabululu. They looked set to go into the break two goals clear.

Just before half-time, in added time, Angolan defender Kialonda Gaspar scored an own goal. Despite their dominance, Angola led only 2–1 at the break.

Miro comes on to finish the job

The third goal came from the bench. Miro, whose first name is Valdemiro, replaced Mabululu and made it 3–1 in the 70th minute. Left-back Pedro Bondo finished the evening with two assists.

Portuguese newspaper A Bola summed up the evening by saying Angola ‘controlled the match from the first minute to the last’ (translated by SNA).

Cissé: four games unbeaten

An African champion with Senegal in 2021, Aliou Cissé arrived in Luanda after a spell in charge of Libya. His Angola record covers four games, including two friendlies, a 1–1 draw with Mauritania and a 3–0 win over the Central African Republic: two wins, two draws, seven goals scored and two conceded. His first competitive game, in Cairo on 25 September, ended 0–0 against Egypt after an Egyptian goal was ruled out for offside.

There was an unusual scheduling gap. While South Sudan and Egypt played their second-round qualifier on 29 September, Angola had to wait until 6 October to host Malawi. The reason for the delay was not specified.

South Sudan twice in November

South Sudan, beaten 2–1 by Malawi and 5–0 by Egypt, sit bottom with a goal difference of -6. Home-and-away fixtures continue until March 2027.

Next comes November. On the 11th, Angola host South Sudan while Egypt welcome Malawi. The reverse fixtures follow before the international window closes. Cissé will face the group’s bottom side twice. The Pharaohs and Flames will meet twice within days.
